The 1000K Challenge is your way to stay motivated and on track with your walking program. It is a simple concept; walk at least 1000K in a 12-month period.
Initially it does sound a bit daunting, so let’s break it down. 1000K is an easy 20K per week with two weeks off for vacation. That sounds much better, right? Let’s break it down a bit more. Walk 5K four times each week. That sounds even better!
And if you are training for a marathon event you will more than surpass this 1000K challenge.
The secret to being successful is to tackle one day at a time, one week at a time. Record the distance for each training session and you will soon see that the mileage adds up. There are lots of ways to keep track of your 1000K. An Excel spreadsheet that you update, a walking journal such as Walking the Distance, or an online program that keeps track of your mileage.
Map My Walk is a great site that gives you the option to map out your routes, log your miles, link up with walking friends, and even track your calories.
Daily Mile is another option and is where I got the nifty widget for The Walking Coach site that tells you how many kilometers I have logged so far in 2011. But my favourite widget from Daily Mile is the doughnut meter. Now while I rarely indulge in a doughnut, I do admit to loving a fresh baked cake doughnut – vanilla glaze with coconut. mmmmmm So the widget below makes me smile, particularly after I have logged another training session and the total goes up!
